Do you believe in creatures that live at the edge of our reality? In this episode, we discuss fearsome critters both wonderful and terrifying. Strange beasts found in the Maine wilderness and told of by European settlers, the Abenaki or “first people”, and loggers as well of others. Christopher Packard, author of Mythical Creatures of Maine: Fantastic Beasts from Legend and Folklore is a full-time high school teacher but also has experience as a field biologist, naturalist, and outdoor educator. He talks to us about the folktale creatures we can only visit in dreams and stories because they live outside of our regular space and time.

Fearsome creatures

The gentleman in the top hat storytelling outfit picture with me is Loren Coleman – a regular associate of mine –  he is a world famous Cryptozoologist, accomplished author and founder of the International Cryptozoology Museum. That picture was at the first annual Bangor Authors’ Book Fair which I organized last winter.

The fencing pictures are taken at Maine’s historic Fort Knox at a Society for Creative Anachronism this year.
