Where did the color indigo come from? According to folklore, a mother of course, an African mother! This Mother’s Day week, we’re exploring mythology from Africa, and highlighting folktales, and legends of mothers. Helen Nde the curator of Mythological Africans, and author of The Runaway Princess and Other Stories, talks to us about her collection of short stories that recount the deeds and misdeeds of memorable women from African history, legend, and folklore. We explore archetypes of African women, expectations and a few underrepresented Africans communities. We also discuss African fabrics, patterns, and colors and how they are a powerful communication tool.
